Friday January 29, 2016, 5:30 pm: Learn How to Take Great Night Photos: Workshop  ($35, 2 hours)

Got a spiffy camera with settings that you find confusing to use?

Have a point & shoot with variables that are…bewildering?

Exactly HOW do you set these cameras when trying to capture awesome sunsets, night lights, and other special scenes like this one?

Join Chris at Tempe Town lake for an evening seminar on night photography.  We will meet before sunset to discuss camera settings for low-light photography, dealing with issues like noise, grain, managing lens flares, etc.  You’ll learn about how the light changes as the sun goes down and what to look for when shooting.

Then, we’ll put what we learn into practice and shoot as the sun goes down and the light gradually changes making each photograph unique. I’ll help each participant with personal coaching and suggestions.

Night photography can be challenging but with just a little knowledge you can create spectacular images.

To participate, you’ll need the following:

1) A camera with the following capabilities (most any Digital SLR or mirror-less camera will work great. — some point-and-shoot cameras will work as well provided they have these capabilities):

– The ability to control ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

– Maximum shutter time on your camera should be 30 seconds or more.

– A method to trip the shutter without touching the camera (e.g.,  a built-in timer, a remote control or a cable shutter release).

2) A sturdy tripod

* FREE Parking in the beach park lot, or paid parking in the parking garage to the south.

We’ll meet at the entrance to the park on the NW Corner of Mill and Rio Salado.  Here’s a map:

Past Workshops…

October 14, 2015, 11:00 am:  Photographing Your Artwork: 3 hour Hands-On Workshop, $65

Artists often find themselves needing photographs of their work. Maybe it’s for a portfolio, a catalog, on-line advertising, print reproduction, documentation, copyright registration, etc. Hiring a professional photographer can prove an expensive proposition. Hiring an amateur who happens to have a nice camera can be even worse because shooting artwork is a specialty that is very different from other kinds of photography. However, with a little training, you can learn to produce professional quality images of your art objects for yourself.

My in-depth workshop will teach you everything you need to know to photograph 2D and 3D art and will give you hands-on practice. You’ll also learn everything you need to know to set up your own, inexpensive home tabletop studio for photographing artworks. Examples of what we will learn include:

• Camera settings

• Lighting

• Composition

• Problem solving

As mentioned above, you’ll have ample hands-on time to practice what you learn with individualized personal coaching. If you wish, you’ll even have the opportunity to bring a piece of your own artwork to photograph.

You’ll need:

• A camera with the capability to set White Balance, ISO, Aperture and shutter speed. Most point-n-shoots and virtually all DSLR or mirror-less cameras will work great.

• A tripod.

The workshop will take place at my house in South Scottsdale. I’ll send the address out to attendees when they RSVP.

Saturday June 6th, 2015 – A Taste of Wine and Photography- Intro Studio Photography Workshop

5:00 – 7:30 PM,  $15.00

Take a little road trip and join us for a wine tasting combined with an introduction to studio photography.

We will have wine and cheese for tasting (bring a bottle of your favorite to share if you like).

* At the beginning of the evening, Chris will do a short introductory lecture and demonstration of the basics of studio photography and lighting.  Then, we will have six open slots for attendees to sign up for 15 minute one-on-one mini-workshops.  You’ll have the opportunity to practice taking your own studio portraits with multiple lighting set ups.

* Bring along a significant other who’s portrait you’d like to take.  Or, if you’d rather, use the workshop time to have Chris do your portrait.

* You can use your own camera provided you have a hot-shoe flash mount on your camera.  If not, you can use Chris’ camera.

The event will be at Chris’s studio in Coolidge.  The studio is about 40 minutes from downtown Phoenix or about 25 minutes from downtown Chandler.  We can accommodate 14 people.

* The 15 minute Mini-workshop slots sign ups will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Be prompt to ensure getting your slot.

Finding the location:

Address: 458 S. Main Street, Coolidge AZ 85128. The map link below is correct! (Caution: for some reason, Google maps gives a location in Florence for this address — if you map it yourself look for the intersection of Main street and Coolidge Avenue 85128 — the studio is the first building to the north on Main street from Coolidge Avenue.)

March 15, 4pm:  Learning Photographic Seeing – Scottsdale Photo Safari for any Camera: Workshop ($20, 2 hours)

More than anything else, seeing the world with a photographer’s eye is what makes a great photographer.  Regardless of the kind of camera used, great photographers observe the world in a way that makes great images.  You can learn this way of “photographic seeing” with just a little instruction and practice so you can take your images to the next level.

Join me for a walk around the beautiful and photogenic Waterfront and Arts District in Scottsdale.  As we walk, we’ll discuss techniques and ideas for photographically seeing what’s around us and practice taking pictures.  I’ll show you how to look at what we see from a photographer’s perspective and give instruction in composition, light, color and style.  As we shoot, we’ll review the results and see how photographic seeing helps us make better photos.

We’ll keep the group small so everyone will get personal instruction and hands-on practice.

Bring any type of digital camera.  Only have a phone camera?  Great.  Have a point-and-shoot?  Wonderful.  Have a Digital SLR?  Cool.

We’ll meet at the Soleri bridge across the canal on Scottsdale Road just south of Camelback Road on Sunday March 15th 2015 starting at 4:00 PM for two hours.  We’ll meet at the base of the two large steel towers on the bridge.  There’s plenty of free public parking in that part of Scottsdale.
